About Brandt
Brandt is the get-outdoors company. State and local agencies steward the parks, lakes, and wildlife people come for; our platforms make getting there easy — from purchasing a hunting or fishing license, to registering a boat, to reserving a campsite — and help agencies manage those resources sustainably. A family with a trip planned doesn't get a second try at opening day, and neither do we. We're modernizing our platform and building new products, always with an eye toward making that experience better for the agencies and the people who depend on it.

About the Role
You will be one of the senior engineers on a product team that builds and runs the systems agencies and their customers rely on: state licensing, reservations, payments, and the data behind them. You will take on the hardest work on the team, own features from design through production, and raise the bar for how the team builds.
You report to your team's Engineering Manager, who owns the people and the delivery commitments. The technical bar is set with your team's Tech Lead and the Chief Engineer, who owns the technical craft line and the company-wide standards. You work inside those standards and help improve them. When one does not fit what your team is building, bring the evidence and make the case for changing it.
Much of what you touch has a long history. You will work in legacy code that runs the business today, alongside modernization work that will replace parts of it. You leave code better than you found it, make the cost of deferred maintenance visible, and push to put upkeep in the plan beside feature work.
This is an individual-contributor role with a real path. Senior engineers at Brandt grow through the technical ladder, earned specialties, technical leadership, and stretch roles, without having to become managers.
Success means work that ships predictably and holds up in production, code other engineers can change safely, and a team that gets better because you are on it.
How We Build
We use AI throughout planning, development, testing, and delivery. Engineers remain accountable for what reaches an agency and its customers.
As a senior engineer, you will use agentic development tools every day and use them well: to explore unfamiliar code, draft and test changes, and review your own work before anyone else sees it. You own every line you merge, whoever or whatever wrote it. You will help your team work out where these tools help and where they create risk and turn what you learn into shared practice rather than private tricks. Agency and customer data stays inside Brandt's data-handling rules, whatever tool is in your hand.
Experiment freely inside the operating model. We hold a higher bar for what reaches an agency, where the cost of a mistake lands on someone's trip or license. When something goes wrong, we look for the cause before we add a checkpoint.
What You'll Do in the First Year
- Ship meaningful work within your first ninety days, and by the end of the year be one of the engineers your team relies on for its hardest problems.
- Own features end to end: shape the approach with the product owner and tech lead, break the work into small batches, build it, test it, release it, and watch it in production.
- Own the quality of your work. Write the automated tests that prove it works and help move your team from QA-owned to engineer-owned quality.
- Review others' code, including AI-generated code, for correctness, security, and maintainability, and give feedback that makes the next change better.
- Take on a part of the system nobody fully understands, document it, and make it safer to change.
- Pay down technical debt as part of delivery and make the cost of deferring it visible to your engineering manager and tech lead.
- Take your turn in on-call and incident response and follow through on the fix that prevents the repeat.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and be a strong voice in hiring through our structured process.
- Build at least one repeatable, AI-assisted workflow that the rest of your team adopts.
You May Be A Good Fit If You
- Have at least four years' experience working with C# and .NET, and relational databases.
- Have worked with payments, licensing, reservations, or other transaction-heavy systems, where the output is money or a legal record.
- Have owned significant features from design through production in a system that real customers depend on and can describe what broke and what you changed.
- Have worked productively in a large legacy codebase and can show a change that made it safer or easier to change.
- Have written automated tests that let a team release with confidence and can say what you chose not to test and why.
- Have debugged production issues methodically and can walk through one where you found the real cause rather than the first plausible one.
- Have hands-on experience with agentic development workflows, can describe where they helped you and where they did not, and can describe catching plausible but incorrect AI-generated code and what you changed afterward.
- Have changed your mind in the last year about where AI belongs in engineering work and can say what moved you.
- Give code review that improves both the code and the engineer and take review well.
- Recognize personal and payment data in a change and handle it accordingly.
- Write things people can act on without a meeting, make commitments carefully, and communicate risk early.
Helpful Experience
- Angular, SQL Server, and Azure (Functions, Service Bus, Storage), with Azure DevOps for source control and pipelines.
- Modernizing a system while it stays in production: incremental migration, replacing a component in place, retiring the old path safely.
- Working with regulated, procurement-driven, or public-sector customers, where "move fast" meets contract language.
How You'll Be Measured
You will be measured on the outcomes of the work you own delivery against commitments, quality and reliability in production, and how maintainable the code you leave behind is. You will also be measured on what you add to the team through code review, mentoring, hiring, and incident follow-through. We do not use per-engineer output counts, lines of code, or AI-usage statistics as performance measures.
What's Hard About This Job
This is a transformation, not a maintenance role. You will inherit legacy code with thin test coverage, uneven practices, fixed deadlines tied to hunting seasons and contracts, and a team that has been through several changes in how it works. The standards and the tooling will change while you are in the seat, and you are expected to help change them. This job is for someone who wants to leave the system better than they found it, not just keep it running.
Compensation & Benefits
The selected candidate should have the skills, qualifications, and experience consistent with a Senior I level within Brandt's job architecture. The compensation range is $130,000 – $150,000, with final level and salary determined based on the candidate's expertise, qualifications, and prior experience within the applicable pay band.
